Must-Visit Sights in Ha Long Bay
Limestone Karsts and Islets
Hạ Long Bay is renowned for many islands made up of limestone karsts and islets, each uniquely shaped and rising majestically from the emerald waters. These formations have evolved over 500 million years and now serves as a backdrop for local fishermen in their sampan fishing boats and floating houses. The queen cable car at Sun World Ha Long Park in Ha Long City is a great way to get a bird's eye view of the thousands of islands in Ha Long Bay.
Cat Ba and Other Caves and Grottos
Explore the bay's numerous caves, including Hang Dau Go (Wooden Stakes Cave), Thiên Cung (Paradise Cave), Sửng Sốt (Surprise Cave) and Trung Trang Cave near the Cat Ba archipelago. These caves feature impressive stalactites and stalagmites and offer a glimpse into the bay's geological history.
Floating Villages
Visit the floating villages of Cua Van, Ba Hang, Cong Tau, and Vong Vieng. The local Vietnamese people here live on floating houses and sustain themselves through fishing and marine aquaculture, providing a unique cultural experience.
Lan Ha Bay
If you prefer a quieter, lesser known bay then Lan Ha Bay is a good bet. It has white sandy beaches and around 400 limestone islets that are just as appealing as Ha Long Bay.
Culture and History
Hạ Long Bay has a rich historical significance, with evidence of prehistoric human presence dating back tens of thousands of years. The bay has witnessed important events in Vietnamese history, including naval battles and the signing of the Halong Bay Agreements in 1948.
The bay also holds immense cultural importance because of its legendary tale about the time period when the Emperor Viet called the Mother Dragon to protect the people from the invaders arriving from the sea. After defeating the enemy, the emeralds were left behind to protect the country from any future invasions. To commemorate this, the Vietnamese people named the bay "Ha Long", which means "Descending Dragon".
Local Cuisine
You will find plenty of restaurants and cafes serving up delicious eats in Ha Long city. Indulge in the local cuisine, featuring fresh seafood such as cuttlefish, oysters and squids. Don't miss out on trying the unique flavors of dishes like 'ngán', also known as Austriella Clam, and 'cà sáy, a poultry breed with characteristics of both duck and chicken.'
